The Colossus of Rhodes was most likely built between 294 to 282 BCE. After a huge victory, the people of Rhodes decided to celebrate by building the 110ft statue. The statue is of Helios, the sun god, patron of the people of Rhodes. The Colossus of Rhodes was destroyed in an earthquake and, although the pharaoh wanted it to be rebuilt, the people decided against it, because they thought that the real Helios was offended by it.

1. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon. Imagine a great garden built on tiers supported by pillars – a garden in the sky. Although some researchers question whether the gardens actually existed, they would have been a marvelous sight if real. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon are said to have been built by King Nebuchadnezzar II around 600 B.C. Legend has it that the gardens were destroyed by an earthquake around 100 B.C. ReplyDelete2. •The Statue of Zeus. Remember the large statue of Zeus in the Disney movie, Hercules? This statue really existed. Built in Olympia, Greece in 450 B.C., the statue was 40 feet tall. Zeus was seated on a wooden throne lined with jewels. In one hand, he held a statue of Nike – the goddess of victory. In the other hand, he held a scepter with an eagle on top. Scholars are not sure how it was destroyed, but they believe it was destroyed in the 5th century.
3. •The Lighthouse of Alexandria. Built around 270 B.C., the Lighthouse of Alexandria sat on the small island of Pharos, hear the city of Alexandria in Egypt. The role of the lighthouse was to guide boats safely along the Nile River and in and out of the harbor around Alexandria. The lighthouse was probably about 380 feet tall. It was made of light colored stone so it could be easily seen during the day. A mirror at the top of the lighthouse reflected sunlight while fires guarded sailors at night. It was slowly destroyed by earthquakes and some of its remains have been discovered in the Nile River. Archeologists have also found coins with pictures of the lighthouse.
4. •Temple of Artemis at Ephesus. In modern Turkey once sat a large temple built for Artemis, the Goddess of the hunt. Built in about 550 B.C., the temple was three times the size of the Parthenon with 127 60-foot high columns. The temple was made of marble. It was destroyed by fire in 356 B.C.
5. •Colossus at Rhodes. Standing over 100 feet tall, the Colossus at Rhodes was a huge statue of Helios, the patron god of the island. The people defended their island from an invasion in 304 B.C. and built the statue in celebration, although an earthquake destroyed it only 50 years later. The statue was placed at the entrance to the island for all to see – similar to the Statue of Liberty, which sits on Liberty Island in the New York Harbor. The Statue of Liberty is 305 feet tall.
6. Mausoleum In 377 B.C., the city of Halicarnassus was the capitol of a small kingdom along the Mediterranean coast of Asia Minor. It was in that year the ruler of this land, Hecatomnus of Mylasa, died and left control of the kingdom to his son, Mausolus. Hecatomnus, a local satrap to the Persians, had been ambitious and had taken control of several of the neighboring cities and districts. Then Mausolus during his reign extended the territory even further so that it eventually included most of southwestern Asia Minor
7. Giza It was originally covered with casing stones (made of highly polished limestone). These casing stones reflected the sun’s light and made the pyramid shine like a jewel. They are no longer present being used by Arabs to build mosques after an earthquake in the 14th century loosened many of them. It has been calculated that the original pyramid with its casing stones would act like gigantic mirrors and reflect light so powerful that it would be visible from the moon as a shining star on earth. Appropriately, the ancient Egyptians called the Great Pyramid “Ikhet”, meaning the “Glorious Light”. How these blocks were transported and assembled into the pyramid is still a mystery.

1. Great Pyramid of Giza- The three pyramids–Khufu (Cheops), Khafra (Chephren) and Menkaura (Mycerimus)–were built between 2700 B.C. and 2500 B.C. as royal tombs.
The sloped walls ,which were intended to mimic the rays of Ra, the sun god, were originally built as steps, and then filled in with limestone. They were built without the aid of modern tools or surveying equipment. The largest and most impressive is Khufu, which covers 13 acres and is believed to contain more than 2 million stone blocks that weigh from two to 30 tons each. The only ancient wonder still standing today.
2. Hanging gardens of Babylon-were built by Nebuchadnezzar II between 605-562 BCE. The gardens were said to have been planted as high as 75 feet in the air on a square terrace that was laid out like steps. The king built the towering gardens to ease his lover amytis homesickness. No mention of the gardens has been found in Babylonian cuneiform inscriptions. Most modern scholars believe existence of the gardens was fictional.
3. Statue of Zeus at Olympia- The statue of Zeus was crafted by the Athenian sculptor Phidias. The statue depicted the god of thunder seated bare-chested at a wooden throne. The Great Barrier Reef
Located in Australia, this reef system is composed of 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands making it 1,600 miles in length.
The overall structure of the reef is composed of billions of tiny organisms, known as coral polyps.
The great barrier reef is the world’s largest individual formation created by living organisms.
Along with the ocean, the reef creates a habitat that supports a great diversity of sea life, some of which are endangered.
The only living thing that can be seen from outer space that is larger than the Great Wall of China is the Great Barrier Reef, the largest coral reef system in the world.
The Grand Canyon
This deep sided gorge has been carved through the landscape over many millions of years by the Colorado River.
With a length of 277 miles long, The Grand Canyon can range in width from 4 to 18 miles and attain a depth of over a mile.
The Grand Canyon is a massive gorge located in the state of Arizona in the United States.
Many layers of rock are preserved in the canyon’s walls which have been exposed due to erosion creating a kaleidoscope of beautiful colors that can change based on the sun’s position and weather conditions.

• At the top of the tomb there was a sculpture created by Pytheos. The carving depicted Mausolus and Artemisia in a chariot being pulled by four massive horses.

Facts About The Seven Wonders
Hanging Gardens of Babylon
1. Legend has it that this garden paradise was planted on an artificial mountain, but many experts say it never really existed.
2. According to one legend, Nebuchadnezzar II built the Hanging Gardens for his Median wife, Queen Amytis, because she missed the green hills and valleys of her homeland.
3. In ancient writings the Hanging Gardens of Babylon were first described Berossus, a Babylonian priest of Marduk who wrote around 290 BC.
4. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon was destroyed by an Earthquake
5. Originally believed to have been built around 600 BC near Hillah, in the Babylon Province of Iraq.

1. The Statue of Zeus at Olympia was about 42 feet tall.

Great Pyramid of Giza
The pyramid is estimated to have around 2,300,000 stone blocks that weigh from 2 to 30 tons each and there are even some blocks that weigh over 50 tons.
The Pyramid of Menkaure, the Pyramid of Khafre and the Great Pyramid of Khufu (Giza) are precisely aligned with the Constellation of Orion.
The interior temperature is constant and equals the average temperature of the earth, 20 Degrees Celsius (68 Degrees Fahrenheit).
The cornerstone foundations of the pyramid have ball and socket construction capable of dealing with heat expansion and earthquakes.
It stands 455ft tall (used to be 486ft but it has been eroded) and it serves as the tomb for the ancient Egyptian pharaoh, Khufu.
Hanging Gardens of Babylon
Location= City of Babylon, or modern day Iraq.
It was destroyed by an earthquake sometime in the second century.
It was said that the gardens were built to please the king’s wife.
Some archaeologists suggest that the actual location was not in Babylon, but 350 miles to the north in the city of Nineveh.

It’s a centerpiece of the ancient metropolis of Babylon.

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon is one of the original Seven Wonders of the World. The King built it for his wife, but some people think it never existed. The Garden of Babylon was under debate because some think it was a myth. There was no records showing a “Hanging Garden” and it was mistaken on where it originated at, because of this people tend not to believe it is real.

I. The Great Pyramids located at Giza on the west bank of the Nile River north of Cairo.

I. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon were built near the Euphrates River in modern-day Iraq by the Babylonian king Nebuchadrezzar II around 600 B.C

III. The king built this for his lover because she was home sick of the nature.
IV. People can walk underneath the beautiful gardens.
V. Most modern scholars believe that the existence of the gardens was part of an inspired and widely believed but still fictional tale.

i. Located in southeastern Turkey.
ii. The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus was a tomb built by Artemisia for her husband.
iii. The enormous mausoleum was made completely of white marble and is thought to have been about 135 feet high.
iv. The first layer was a 60-foot base of steps, followed by a middle layer of 36 Ionic columns and a stepped, pyramid-shaped roof. At the very top of the roof lay the tomb, decorated by the work of four sculptors, and a 20-foot marble rendition of a four-horse chariot

The mausoleum was largely destroyed in an earthquake in the 13th century and its remains were later used in the ditches of a castle.
Colossus of Rhodes

iv. Building had three levels: a square level at the bottom, an octagonal level in the middle and a cylindrical top.
v. Above stood a 16-foot statue.
